FCHA Chepstow
Scope/Overview of project
Silverstone Green Energy were requested to install a 9kW Solar PV System on a Care Home in Chepstow. The Care Home was being refurbished and the owners wanted to ensure the property was fit for purpose and the future. Installing a Solar PV System on the Care Home will reduce their energy requirements from the grid and therefore reduce their energy bills. A SolarEdge system was installed, enabling the Care Home to monitor their system, usage, and any export throughout the day via the SolarEdge App. Having the latest up-to-date data, it will enable the owners to make informed decisions about their electricity usage and if the need arises, to extend their system and add batteries if needed.
Practical Walkthrough
A full in-depth site survey was carried out, looking at the Care Homes electrics and roof structure. Agreeing with the owner placements of the inverters and electrical runs to ensure safety. Using an on-roof rail system, 25 JA solar panels, each individually optimised with SolarEdge optimisers, over 2 roofs, Southwest and Southeast facing, as agreed with the customer, were installed. The Solar panels and optimisers were teamed together with a Three Phase 9kW SolarEdge inverter, enabling the customer and Care Home to have full visibility.
Puffin Produce, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
2MW Solar PV Installation
5100 Solar Panels
Over 16 Roofs
Since the 1970s Puffin Produce have been proud to offer Welsh customers the best Welsh potatoes, grown, picked and packed in Pembrokeshire. Puffin Produce is now the largest supplier of Welsh produce in Wales, supplying a wide variety of potatoes and seasonal vegetables to multiple major retailers and wholesalers. Puffin Produce pride themselves on giving local farmers a fair deal, always remaining true to their collective roots, meaning that when they do well, farmers do well.
Puffin Produces Requirements
Potato storage needs to take place at a temperature below 6’C to prevent sprouting. In nature the warmer temperature indicates Spring, and the potato will begin sprouting naturally. To prevent this process, potatoes are stored beneath 6’C until they are ready for shipping. As it is difficult to keep cold stores reliably cold, most potato producers spray them with a preservative to further reduce sprouting. At Puffin Produce the drive towards a reliable product with minimal chemical intervention, refrigeration is kept at 3’C, closely monitored and managed.
These power hungry cold stores require a lot of energy to operate particularly during the summer months. This energy requirement matches perfectly with solar PV production and by running the stores to a target of 2’C during the day and 4’C at night the refrigeration equipment can work harder when solar productivity is available and maintain the mean temperature of 3’C. Perfect for keeping potatoes fresh for months.
Collaboration
Puffin Produce required more than a sub-contractor; they needed a partner. Silverstone Green Energy and Puffin Produce worked together to devise a solution that would meet Puffin Produce’s energy demands but that would not negatively impact their estate and could be installed without interrupting productivity. A joint effort between Puffin Produce, Silverstone Green Energy, Havenkey (electrical contractor) and National Grid was formed in order to deliver the project.
Construction Challenges
Puffin was a complex campus of buildings with many vehicle movements throughout the day and is strictly controlled environment in terms of health and safety culture, Puffin Produces team of in-house health and safety officers worked closely with the project team to ensure that the highest possible standards of health and safety were followed and seen to be followed at all times. Some of the buildings were as high as 15m above ground level and enduring roof access was provided as a part of the project wherever possible. This means that man safe systems were installed throughout the estate to facilitate the long-term maintenance of the solar arrays.
Construction Phase
The project was broken down into a phase for each building. Some phases overlapped but this phased approach meant that the wider project team could conduct a thorough review at the end of each phase, learning lessons and incorporating those lessons in the phases going forward. Flexible scheduling of the phases meant that busy times at different buildings diverted the project staff to less busy buildings to reduce the inherent disruption from installation.
Outcomes
The phased approach in collaboration with National Grid meant that each building could be energised delivering project benefits during the construction phase, at the end of the project around 2MW of installed capacity had been completed yielding 1.6MW hours per annum of usable energy.
This system produces enough energy each year to;
- Make 51 million cups of tea which is enough for the whole population of South Korea
- Drive to the moon and back 18 times in a Tesla Model 3
- 133 million portions of chemical free potato, mashed, boiled or chipped, the choice is yours.
“As a food producer supplying the UK’s leading supermarkets, we demand excellence throughout our supply chain. Where Silverstone excelled was in their ability to understand our business and energy flows, thus their depth of knowledge added great value. It is also fantastic to work with a Welsh-based company to deliver this significant step forward in the reduction of our Scope 1&2 emissions. The project ran smoothly, and we continue to partner with Silverstone as we look at further projects across our business estate.”
