Case Study Framework – FCHA Chepstow

Scope/Overview of project

We were requested to install a 9Kw solar system on a care home in Chepstow that was being refurbished to ensure it was fit for purpose and the future. Installing a Solar PV system will ensure the care home can reduce their energy requirements in a very high energy environment. Installing a SolarEdge system will enable the care home to monitor their usage throughout the day. Giving the management intelligent information on the way the home uses the electricity and if and when the need for more solar PV and or a battery.

Practical Walkthrough

A full in-depth site survey was carried out looking at the homes electrics and roof structure. Agreeing with the owner placements of the inverters and electrical runs to ensure safety. Using an on-roof rail system, 25 JA solar panels, each individually optimised with SolarEdge optimisers, over 2 roofs, Southwest and Southeast facing, as agreed with the customer, were installed. The Solar panels and optimisers were teamed together with a 3phase 9KW SolarEdge inverter, enabling the customer and home to have full visibility of the system via the Solar Edge app.

Practical Walkthrough

After initial site survey, the inverter was found to be faulty and not working at all. The customer was given two options to rectify the issues:

Option 1 – Replace like for like inverter.

Option 2 – Upgrade the whole system to SolarEdge using a new inverter and optimisers on the solar panels and therefore opening up the possibilities of being able to monitor the whole PV system remotely via the SolarEdge App. This will then enable the customer to see how much they are generating and at what times they are using the energy and therefore making small changes to their business to reduce their energy bills and Grid usage even more.

Once on the roof, the roof fixings were found not to be suitable and were also replaced as well as placing optimisers on every panel. The optimisers enable the customer to monitor, via the app, each and every panel in the system, making sure they are performing to optimal levels and indicating any issues, should there be any. The customer is then able to get the maximum benefit from the system at all times. On inspection a solar panel was also found to have been broken, this was replaced by a like for like panel and with the optimisers this doesn’t affect the output of the system.

The system is now all up and running with 12 years of warranty on the inverter and 5-year workmanship warranty, the customer is able to monitor the system at any point of the day, all with out interfering with their FIT payments.

Scope/Overview of project

Preseli Stores in a large convenience store in Crymych, Pembrokeshire, with its own bakery. Having had their system installed many years ago, the system was found not to be working when the customer went to the generation meter to take a reading for their FIT payments. The company that carried out the installation no longer install Solar PV and would not come and help with the issues. We were contacted to see if we could help.
